Today's class we continue with Reference word. It replace noun too, same like pronouns.
For examples ;
All healthy people should exercise regularly, no matter how old they are.
Here, they refer to All healthy people. It replace the word.
Next, we continue with the Contextual clues which is we have to find the meaning of the word given based on the text by using the hints and clues given in the passage.
There a 4 main types of Contextual Clues.
1. Rewording
2. Synonym
3. Antonym
4. Details
Rewording is when the author says the word in another way that is typically easier to understand.
An example;  Resentment, a feeling of bitterness and anger, is often felt by people who are passed over for promotions. Resentment means a feeling of bitterness and anger.
Next, Synonym. A writer sometimes uses synonym context clues to help with hard words.  A synonym context clue is one or two words that mean almost the same as the one that the author does not expect us to know.
For example ; The young girl was very aloof.  She always seemed unsociable, unapproachable, and uninterested.
Aloof means unsociable, unapproachable and uninterested.
Then, Antonym. A writer is using antonym context clues when they use a word with opposite meaning to give us hints about the word that they don’t think we will know.
As examples : Dianna appeared to be a very moral and upstanding young lady, but those who knew her knew that she was iniquitous. Iniquitous means evil and immoral.
Lastly, Details. A writer is using details as context clues when they give us explanations or examples as hints about the word that they don’t think we will know.
Example; Father was ecstatic because Joshua decided to go to the college that he wanted him to.
Ecstatic here means happy.
